New Dwelling – Megalong Valley, NSW

Nestled into the side of a gently sloping rural block with a private vineyard, this off-grid getaway is situated deep within the local wine country of the Megalong Valley, ‘the valley under the rock’.  The residence enjoys 270 degree views across the rolling hills of the Megalong, to the signature sandstone escarpments of the Blue Mountains beyond.

Double glazed linkages connect the three pavilions at the point of entry, allowing the landscape to seamlessly flow through. Framed views upon arrival (Narrow Neck to the East, Shipley Plateau and the Hydromajestic to the North) provide soft connections to the landscape whilst the clearly defined separation of pavilions affords privacy to both the Master and Guest bedroom wings.

At 700m above sea level, the scheme addresses the local climatic conditions ranging from scorching summer temperatures to occasional winter snowfall and seasonal high winds. Passive solar design was a must for this offgrid project, with the design carefully sited and orientated to maximise the Northern aspect in addition to capturing the expansive views. Thermal performance was key with the selection of highly performing materials to protect and provide comfort against the elements.  A palette of burnished concrete, hardwood timber and galvanised steel throughout creates a warm and robust industrial look that complements the rugged surrounding landscape.

A strategically placed double-sided fireplace between the indoor and outdoor living spaces adds to the winter ambience, complementing the magnificent Northern and Eastern aspects without disruption.

Tend the fire, enjoy a glass of wine and relax..
