Nestled into the flowing meadows of Little Hartley, this scheme is a modern take on a Chinese courtyard house formulated upon the select placement of modular shipping containers. Using the container shell as a permanent formwork, this scheme explores varying material skin treatments such as gabion rain screens and board-form concrete.
Designed as a series of courtyards and zones, this scheme engages the occupant with the surrounding landscape drawing the natural environment right through the building itself. The light streaming in through a central oculus tracks the passage of the sun throughout the day and across the seasons; grounding the occupant in place and time.
